Measurement and Evaluation P.K. Panchal Introduction
The
purpose of the discussion that follows is to know how a teacher can measure and
evaluate the goals in the classroom through the various teacher designed
evaluation instrument.
Measurement and Evaluation The
learning process is a complex array of forces acting on and interacting with the
student, with the end result of a change in behaviour (intellectual, affective,
or psychomotor) in the direction of the educational objectives established by
the instructor. Measurement is an
attempt to describe quantitatively the behaviour or, more specifically, the
change of behaviour. Many believe
it is impossible to quantitatively human behaviour and argue that paper and
pencil tests are artificial, removed from learning psychologically stressful
(because of student fear and misuse of test results), and non-interpretable.
But some level of either qualitative or quantitative assessment of
behavioural change is necessary for the individual and society, because both
positive and corrective feedback (praise and redirection) are necessary to
learning. Each person needs to know
how well he or she is doing compared to others.
So, the measurement is evaluation put in quantitative terms – the
description of an event or characteristics in number.
Measurement tells how much, how often, or how well by providing scores,
ranks or ratings.
