The degree is awarded by Sardar Patel University and is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. The course has been specifically designed to develop efficient teachers of English who can teach at the Higher Secondary and College level. It has been recognized as a Postgraduate Studies Centre by the University Grants Commission since 1972. This Institute is now upgraded to the position of an Institution of Advanced Studies in Education [IASE] under the centrally sponsored scheme for teacher education. The Government of Gujarat has recognized it as the principal Advisory Board for the teaching of English, including the framing of syllabi and examinations and the production of textbooks and other teaching materials to be used in schools in the state.
