TALL Enriched CAPSULE for Collaborative Learning

 

Abstract

This is a project description based on a pilot study.

Technology Aided Language Learning [TALL] is integrated with Classroom Activities Promoting Simple, Useful Language Environment [CAPSULE] in this study. The effect of this combination on non-native teacher-learners’ ability to learn and teach English through collaborative efforts is analysed qualitatively. The data collected through personal observation of the teacher educator, reflective reports of the M. A. ELT teacher-learners, the feedback of the students taught by them and the opinion of external observers are taken into consideration for the analysis. The teacher-learners prepared a digital Portfolio and submitted a hard copy as well as a soft copy. Both the teacher-learners and the students taught by them were given pre and post tests. But the main emphasis was on qualitative analysis and the quantitative analysis was used only to validate the findings of the qualitative analysis. The problems of Indian students in general and Gujarati teacher-learners in particular in using technology, in teaching English by providing a natural exposure and in working as a team are studied and implications are worked out for future programmes.

Introduction
In the new millennium where technology has already occupied a special place in our life, no teacher education programme can be complete without equipping the future teachers with the skills of using this medium which has infinite potential. Rapid developments are taking place in the field of technology and things are becoming obsolete faster than before.  It is necessary to develop the discerning skills in the future generation of teachers in such a way that they remain masters of new innovations and use them with the full understanding of why they need to be used, how they need to be used and how far they should be used.  The learners who are aspiring to become teachers need to be empowered with the mental faculties which assist them to analyse, evaluate and accept ideas after a thorough examination of their  advantages and limitations.  It is necessary that they understand their responsibility in choosing this medium for teaching and remain masters of the new inventions as and when they are made available rather than be overawed by them and use them as slaves.
