Teaching
and Testing Writing
Dr. Ranganayaki SrinivasA study to Develop Communicative Techniques and Materials to Teach and Test Written English at the Secondary Level. The present study traces the development in the areas of teaching and testing written English from the ancient days to the present and proposes a set of strategies and materials suited to the learners of Gujarat. It is a survey-cum-experimental study. The survey focuses on the present way of teaching and testing writing. Based on the analysis of the present situation and the review of related literature, the investigator devised strategies, which would create an urge on the part of the learner to communicate through writing. In addition the investigator also designed materials with elements of information gap, guessing and open-endedness. The techniques and materials were found to increase opportunities for interaction among the learners. It was possible to adopt them for pair and group work thereby promoting language use. This process also made the writing activities genuine and realistic. These strategies and materials were systematically tried out on four representative schools in Gujarat and it was established that they have significant positive effect on the learners ability to communicate in writing.
